Community HealthView
The health of communities is influenced by a broad array of determinants each with its own geographic impacts. Understanding the characteristics of these geography is essential for anyone hoping to improve health at the community level. Geographic information systems (GIS), permit the combination of many data sources into dynamic analytic maps, and have been helpful for understanding a variety of health care issues such as defining hospital service areas, examining the affect of distance on access, and disease patterns.(Farley 1977, Wennberg 2000, Kohli 1995, Fryer 1999, Love 1995, Becker 1998, Parchman 1999) However, the potential of GIS to enhance our understanding of the regional impact and characteristics of primary care has not been fully harnessed for use by the general public. Community HealthView is an innovative, Web-based tool that gives the general public unparalled access to public-release health and social science data - and to the sophisticated statistical and mapping software that is needed to analyze such data. You can:
- Upload your own data to create maps relevant to health in your community
- Create maps
- About populations in your community using census data
- About health in your community from survey and other data
- About relationships between your community and its elected legislators
- View tables
- Discover
- Differences in various indicators of health from one neighborhood to another
- Differences in community characteristics around your clinic
- Save and print your maps and tables to share with patients, payors, and policy-makers
This tool will appeal to public health practitioners, regional health planners, holders of data relevant to health, policy-makers, advocates, community leaders, and individuals interested in their community's health. Community HealthView was created through the sponsorship of one regional health foundation, and will only grow as other community data-holders register to upload and share there data. Contact us if you are interested in adding your data, and please return to the site to explore new mapping opportunities as other community data is added.
Community HealthView is a component of HealthLandscape, a collaboration of the Health Foundation of Greater Cincinnati and the American Academy of Family Physicians.
